Murano Art Glass Ruffled Bowl
A wonderfully sculptural little piece of mid-century Venetian glass, with a deeply ruffled, almost flower-like form and a particularly striking combination of colour. Rich cobalt blue rises through smoky pale pink into vivid ruby red, while the folded edges reveal flashes of clear glass beneath.
Hand-blown and shaped while hot, the bowl has a wonderfully fluid, slightly irregular form that shifts depending on the angle you view it from. The heavy glass base gives it plenty of presence despite its relatively small size, while the pulled and folded rim makes it feel more like a miniature glass sculpture than a conventional bowl.
Likely made in Murano, Italy during the 1950s or 60s, it would originally have been sold as a decorative bowl, catchall or ashtray.
