French Vallauris Sculptural Lava Glaze Vase

A wonderfully sculptural piece of mid-century French pottery, most likely from Vallauris and dating to the 1960s. Its unusual openwork form is finished in a heavily textured cream and caramel lava glaze, with a vivid glossy red glaze spilling down from the upper section and a warm mustard-yellow interior.

The contrast between the rough, volcanic surface and the smooth red glaze gives it loads of character, while the slightly irregular rim and free-form silhouette make it feel more like a small piece of ceramic sculpture than a conventional vase.

Unmarked, so the maker remains unknown, but the form and glaze treatment are strongly associated with the experimental ceramics produced around Vallauris during the post-war period.
