Scheurich Abstract West German Vase Model 238
A lovely early Scheurich piece with far more of a 1950s modern-art feel than the heavier Fat Lava styles that followed. The body has a heavily textured off-white glaze, decorated with loose black lines, flashes of turquoise and blocks of mustard yellow and deep red.
The design feels almost painted onto the vase like a tiny abstract artwork, with the rough surface giving the colours even more character. Inside, the vase is finished in a glossy black glaze, which makes a nice contrast with the pale exterior.
Made by Scheurich in West Germany, likely around the late 1950s to early 1960s, this is a particularly good example of the more graphic, experimental side of mid-century German ceramics.
