Jopeko Shrink-Glaze Vase

A wonderfully tactile little piece from Jopeko, made in West Germany in the late 1950s. The rounded body is covered in the maker’s distinctive black-and-white shrink glaze, where the thick white surface contracts during firing to reveal the dark ground beneath in an irregular, almost cellular pattern.

Three raised spots of yellow, blue and deep red add a tiny burst of primary colour to the otherwise monochrome surface. This decoration is associated with Jopeko’s early modern Décor 1003, introduced in 1957 and closely related to the better-known Cortina glaze produced by Jasba around the same period.

The softly pinched, flaring rim gives the vase an especially pleasing silhouette, while the unpredictable glaze means every example has its own pattern. Small in scale but full of texture and character, it’s a lovely example of the more experimental side of 1950s West German ceramics.
