Robbie Basho & Jon Adams Concert Poster — The Jabberwock, Berkeley

A tall, slender concert poster with rich blue lettering against an off-white background, advertising Robbie Basho and Jon Adams at the Jabberwock on 6–8 September 1966. An ornate horizontal divider separates the performers, while the venue’s Gothic-style lettering anchors the lower section.

Basho was a Berkeley-based guitarist whose music drew on Indian ragas and other musical traditions, taking the acoustic guitar well beyond a straightforward folk accompaniment. His adopted surname came from Matsuo Bashō, the seventeenth-century Japanese poet, and hearing Ravi Shankar was an important influence on his musical direction.

The poster has its own sense of humour. Basho is welcomed back as Berkeley’s “favorite sun”, returning from the “decadent east (coast)”, while Jon Adams is introduced as a “psong psinger”. Those small verbal quirks give it a personal, slightly mischievous character alongside the formal lettering.

A rewarding piece for anyone interested in experimental acoustic music, Berkeley’s coffeehouse culture or simply a well-composed blue-and-cream design. The unusually narrow proportions are an important part of its appeal.
