Mark Spoelstra Concert Poster — The Jabberwock, Berkeley
Strong magenta lettering on yellow gives this tall, narrow Mark Spoelstra poster an immediately recognisable look. His name dominates the upper section, followed by the announcement of his final West Coast appearances before a tour of Britain. The advertised Jabberwock dates were 26–28 August 1966, with two shows each evening.
Spoelstra was a singer and twelve-string guitarist whose early career included hitchhiking from California to New York and playing for tips in Greenwich Village coffeehouses. One of the young musicians he performed with there was Bob Dylan. That connection places him within the small, overlapping folk circuit linking East Coast coffeehouses with venues such as the Jabberwock.
The Jabberwock’s address already had a musical history of its own. Before becoming the folk coffeehouse, the premises had housed Tsubo, a jazz venue where Wes Montgomery recorded a live session.
The long format, generous spacing and vivid colour combination make this especially effective as a standalone piece. It has enough visual strength to hold its own without needing a whole wall of concert posters around it.
