March–April Calendar Poster — The Jabberwock, Berkeley

A particularly engaging Jabberwock design, this calendar brings several weeks of the coffeehouse’s programme together within an ornamental border. Warm ochre colouring, dark lettering and the large Western-style “CALENDAR” heading give it the appearance of a richly detailed community noticeboard.

Covering March and early April 1966, the programme includes Robbie Basho, Dan Paik, Larry Hanks, Ron Chinn and the Congress of Wonders, alongside poetry, jazz and regular “hoots”. It offers a broader view of the Telegraph Avenue venue than a single concert advertisement, showing the variety of performances sharing its calendar.

One name is especially entertaining: Blind Ebbets Field was an alias used by Barry “The Fish” Melton of Country Joe & the Fish, borrowing the name of the Brooklyn Dodgers’ former baseball ground. On this calendar, he is promoted as the “world’s foremost Hudson River Delta Blues singer”, which gives some indication of the humour involved.

There is plenty beyond the performers to enjoy, too. The refreshments line promises sandwiches, sweets, coffee, tea, cider, beer and mud pie. Between the music listings and the menu, it is a lovely glimpse of the everyday life of the Jabberwock.

This item can be framed. For this piece, I would recommend a black or cream mount and an A2 walnut frame. Frames are solid wood, come in standard sizes, and include standard glass. For specialty framing, I can also recommend a local professional framer.
