“South Africa: The Anatomy of Apartheid” Lecture & Benefit Poster
Black printing, a photographic portrait and densely arranged event information give this mustard-coloured poster a distinctly documentary character. It advertises talks by Franz J. T. Lee, described on the poster as a South African studying in West Germany, alongside a benefit evening at the Jabberwock.
The listed sponsor, the Alexander Defense Committee, organised support for Neville Alexander and other South African political prisoners. The poster connects that work with Bay Area venues, speakers and performers, showing how a neighbourhood coffeehouse could also become involved in fundraising around international issues.
The Jabberwock benefit, advertised for 5 September at 9pm, lists the San Francisco Mime Troupe performing scenes from A Minstrel Show, together with blues and jazz singer Sharon Lee. Despite their name, the Mime Troupe’s theatre includes talking and singing: they use “mime” in the older theatrical sense of representing everyday life through performance, rather than simply silent pantomime. With its mixture of lecture notices, benefit details and sponsorship information, this is an absorbing historical poster to read closely. Its appeal lies as much in those smaller details as in the bold headline.

This item can be framed. For this piece, I would recommend a black or red mount and an A2 walnut frame. Frames are solid wood, come in standard sizes, and include standard glass. For specialty framing, I can also recommend a local professional framer.
