G Plan Librenza Chest of 3 Drawers
A striking early G Plan chest of drawers from the Librenza, or Tola & Black, range, produced by E. Gomme during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The warm tola wood is the star of this one, with beautifully figured grain running across the top, sides and three broad drawer fronts. Darker timber edging frames it, and it sits above the characteristic black base, with tapered legs and adjustable brass feet. The original brass drop handles add another lovely bit of contrast.
All three drawers are generously sized and traditionally dovetailed, making this a genuinely useful storage piece as well as a particularly handsome example of early G Plan. The low, wide proportions make it work beautifully as a bedroom chest, but it would be equally at home in a living room or hallway with artwork, ceramics, or a mirror above.
This example has been refinished, bringing back the richness and variation in the tola while retaining the original piece's character. The black base and brass details have also been refreshed, and the drawers run smoothly.
It is a great example of the Librenza look: warmer and a little more decorative than much of the teak furniture that followed in the 1960s, with the black and brass details giving it a distinctive period feel.
