Fielding’s Devon Ware ‘Hurley’ Jug

Now this is a colourful old thing. Made by Fielding’s in Stoke-on-Trent sometime between 1917 and 1930, this Devon Ware ‘Hurley’ jug is nearly a century old, but hardly looks its age.

The creamy body is hand-painted with big sweeps of orange, blue, yellow and green, picked out in black and finished with a wonderfully jaunty little fruit motif beneath the spout. Then there’s that handle – gloriously curly.

The base is marked Devon Ware, Fielding’s, Stoke-on-Trent, Made in England, with ‘No. 1 Hurley’ impressed into the pottery.
