Edward Ball – Mixed-Media Wall Sculpture

This is a wonderful statement piece of contemporary art by British abstract artist Edward Ball, measuring an impressive approximately 61 × 150 cm. Viewing is essential to appreciate this work.

Constructed from two separate sheets of transparent Perspex, the work combines layers of poured, dripped and splashed paint with bold discs of green, blue, yellow, pink and purple. Substantial chrome fixings hold the two panels apart, turning what might otherwise be a flat abstract painting into something much more sculptural. Ball’s name is engraved into the lower edge of the Perspex.

The transparent construction is a huge part of the fun. Light, shadows and whatever sits behind the artwork become part of the composition, while the separation between the two painted layers gives it a surprising amount of depth. Move around it, and different marks overlap, disappear and line up, so it never looks quite the same from two angles.

That layered construction also connects to Ball’s wider artistic practice. He has spent much of his career exploring the relationship between music, sound and visual art, painting in direct response to rhythm, movement and emotion. He describes his process as an intuitive, physical response to music, using gestural movements to translate sound into paint.

This idea becomes particularly interesting in his Perspex works. Ball has produced compositions using multiple transparent sheets, physically spacing the layers apart with chrome fittings. The different painted surfaces reflect the separate layers and instruments within music, allowing them to interact visually much as different sounds combine in a track.

Ball became a professional artist in 2002 and has exhibited in solo and group shows in the UK and Canada. Businesses, architects, musicians, and music-equipment manufacturers have also commissioned his work, and it is held in private collections internationally. In 2004 he created Rhythm, the first of his major large-scale works painted directly in response to music, beginning an approach that has remained central to his practice for more than two decades.

A huge, colourful and slightly mad piece of contemporary British art that works particularly well where light can pass through it. At a metre and a half wide, it definitely isn't shy.
