David & Tina with Dan Paik Concert Poster — The Jabberwock, Berkeley
Purple display lettering and smaller red details sit against a warm yellow background on this poster for David and Tina Meltzer, appearing with Dan Paik at the Jabberwock on 8 and 9 April. Decorative flourishes and the flowing venue lettering give it plenty to look at without overcrowding the design.
David and Tina belonged to the overlap between folk music, poetry and the emerging psychedelic scene. David was a poet as well as a musician, and the couple became the central creative figures in the Bay Area band Serpent Power. Their later album, Poet Song, released in 1969, alternated David’s spoken poetry with songs largely sung by Tina.
That mixture feels very much at home on a Jabberwock bill. The Telegraph Avenue coffeehouse programmed music alongside poetry and other performances, as its surviving calendars show. Here, the small print adds another pleasing detail: Greg Lasser’s “magnificent banjo” is advertised as being “played by himself”. Apparently, that was worth reassuring the audience about.
An attractive poster with a story that reaches beyond the headline names, particularly for anyone interested in the connections between American folk music and psychedelia.
