Benefit Folk Festival Poster — The Questing Beast, Berkeley
An exuberant red-on-cream festival poster with elaborate Western lettering, oversized pointing hands and a line-up that rewards a proper read. The advertised performers include Jesse Fuller, Lynn Hughes, Country Joe & the Fish, K. C. Douglas and Dan Paik, with three evenings listed for 28–30 April and the wonderfully open-ended finishing time of “8:30 till ?”.
The Questing Beast was a separate venue from the Jabberwock, operating within the same Berkeley folk scene. It occupied the former Cabale Creamery premises on San Pablo Avenue, where Jerry Garcia had played bluegrass in the early 1960s. The Questing Beast itself was short-lived, opening in late 1965 and closing in May 1966.
Headliner Jesse Fuller was a one-man band in a very literal sense. Alongside singing and playing guitar, he used a homemade, foot-operated bass instrument called a fotdella. Fuller also wrote San Francisco Bay Blues, so the name at the top of this crowded bill comes with a considerable musical legacy.
