Dan Crary Concert Poster — The Jabberwock, Berkeley
Deep burgundy lettering, mustard-yellow paper, and a pair of pointing hands give this Dan Crary poster plenty of presence. Advertising his appearances at the Jabberwock on 11 and 12 February 1966, the wide landscape design feels like an old Western handbill, with Crary’s name taking up almost the entire stage.
The Jabberwock stood at 2901 Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, where owner Bill “Jolly Blue” Ehlert brought local musicians and travelling performers into the same coffeehouse. Its programmes included artists such as Taj Mahal, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb, placing it firmly within the Bay Area’s thriving folk and blues scene.
Crary was among the musicians who helped establish the acoustic guitar as a lead instrument in bluegrass, rather than leaving it in the background providing rhythm. His speciality was flatpicking, a style also associated with Doc Watson and Clarence White. Away from performing, he spent nearly thirty years teaching communications at California State University, Fullerton, which is quite a second career to fit around all that guitar playing.
The generous lettering and restrained two-colour design make this an appealing piece for a music room, record corner or anyone with a weakness for vintage typography.
