Carlton Ware Orange-Themed Pot & Cream Jug
A wonderfully bright pair of 1930s Carlton Ware, modelled as gloriously oversized oranges, complete with dimpled peel, a glossy citrus-orange glaze, and green leafy details. The lidded pot is topped with a little white-and-yellow blossom and has a spoon opening, while the matching cream jug continues the theme with a green handle and a sunny yellow interior.
Originally intended for marmalade or preserves and cream, these are a lovely example of the playful novelty ceramics Carlton Ware produced during the Art Deco period. There is something particularly pleasing about serving marmalade from an orange that is, essentially, pretending to be an even bigger orange.
Both pieces carry the Carlton Ware, Made in England backstamp.
