West German Rumtopf Jar – Cobalt Blue & Cream
A striking vintage German Rumtopf jar, decorated with richly coloured cobalt blue fruit motifs against a beautifully textured cream and brown background.
This generously proportioned ceramic jar features raised decoration depicting pears, grapes and plums, each picked out in a glossy deep blue glaze. The contrasting rustic finish gives the piece a lovely tactile quality, while its angular body, scrolling side handles and fitted lid make it an especially decorative example of traditional German kitchen pottery.
Rumtopf, meaning 'rum pot', is a centuries-old German tradition of preserving seasonal fruits in rum and sugar. Throughout the summer, different fruits would be added to the jar as they came into season, gradually creating a rich, boozy mixture traditionally enjoyed at Christmas, often served over ice cream, puddings or other desserts.
Rumtopf jars became especially fashionable during the 1960s and 1970s, when West German pottery manufacturers produced a wonderful variety of designs, colours and decorative finishes. This example has a particularly attractive blue-and-cream colour scheme, reminiscent of traditional European salt-glazed stoneware, but with the bold decorative character associated with mid-century German ceramics.
