Carlton Ware “Walking Cow” Milk Jug

A vintage cow-shaped milk jug with a rounded cream-and-black body, glossy black legs and ochre-coloured hooves. A little pink-and-white udder sits underneath, giving this unusual piece its unmistakable character.

Thought to date from the late 1970s or 1980s, the jug is attributed to Carlton Ware and reflects the playful approach of its well-known Walking Ware, which gave everyday tableware legs and feet. Here, the cow’s body forms the jug itself, with a curved handle and gently flared pouring lip above the sculpted details.

The flowing boundary between the cream and black glaze gives it a bold, simple pattern that works beautifully with the rounded shape. An entertaining addition to a kitchen dresser or collection of novelty ceramics.
