Brass Tortoise Trinket Box

A wonderfully quirky vintage brass tortoise, with a hinged shell that lifts to reveal a surprisingly generous little dish inside.

The shell has a lovely raised geometric pattern, while the wrinkled neck, tiny face and chunky clawed feet give him plenty of character.

Likely dating from the mid-to-late 20th century, these decorative tortoises were produced as small containers and are sometimes described as ashtrays. I think he’s much better suited to keeping jewellery, keys, loose change or other little treasures safe.
