West German Vase in Cream and Chocolate Brown

A tall West German ceramic vase with an intricate patterned surface and a rich combination of honey, cream and glossy chocolate brown.

There’s plenty to enjoy in the decoration, with oval medallions, diamond-shaped centres and little four-petalled flowers arranged in bands around the vase. Rows of raised dots and fine vertical marks fill the spaces between, giving the surface an almost textile-like quality. The pattern continues all the way around, making this a piece worth displaying somewhere you can appreciate it from different angles.

With its earthy colours and richly patterned finish, it has a lovely 1970s feel. I’d pair it with warm wood, linen and a few simpler ceramics, or give it a spot of its own on a sideboard. A handful of dried branches would suit the tall shape, although there’s more than enough going on here to enjoy it empty.
